Transportation Engineer 2 - Lead Design Engineer

The Opportunity: 
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Lead Design Engineer to join our team in Downtown Seattle.

As a Lead Design Engineer, you perform all phases of highway design on the State Highway System, under the supervision of an engineering supervisor and licensed engineer. This position is responsible for producing complex highway designs, contract plans, specifications, estimates, and agreements for multiple projects that benefit the traveling public.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Responsible for all phases of the development of a transportation project; prepares design documentation, calculations, and contract documents for Design Build and Design Bid Build projects of varying complexity.
  • Produce reports, spreadsheets, graphs, charts, public presentations, and other design documents; utilizes computer software (MicroStation and InRoads) for computer aided design and modeling.
  • Perform right of way plan preparation, design documentation, stormwater reports, environmental documentation, PS&E's, etc. 
  • Research and collect preliminary documents.
  • Review documents and recommend engineering solutions.
  • Audit, analyze, track and make recommendations affecting the design schedule, preliminary estimate, and construction budget.
  • Train other team members to complete similar work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications for this position:
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) and one (1) year of engineering experience OR two (2) years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, practices and methods and the ability to apply them to the assigned projects to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze, develop and propose alternate solutions to complex engineering elements using sound engineering judgment and experience.
  • Experience in operating CAD and design software at a production level for design of highway projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook computer applications.
  • Experience reviewing engineering plans and specifications for compliance with established standards.
  • Experience producing technical reports, design documentation, and exhibits.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and coordination with support groups, local agencies, utilities, consultants, and the general public.
  • Strong history of timely completion of work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Proven thoroughness and accuracy in work performance.
  • A valid driver's license.
